Today, located in central Turkey, Cappadocia is well known for its peculiar volcanic landscape, unique geological formations and extensive rock-cut architecture. The colorful geological landscape offers various morphological formations, including so-called “fairy chimneys”. The historical landscape houses art and architecture of diverse cultures, while Byzantine rock-cut churches and frescoes therein are abundant.

Traditional settlements in Cappadocia are located to benefit from topography and natural rock structure at the highest level, and usually consist of hybrid houses with carved and built spaces. In addition to being a natural and cultural heritage site and an important tourist destination, the microclimatic advantages of the rock-cut spaces in Cappadocia have been recently rediscovered by the food storage industry.
